Hệ thống giáo dục đại học ở Phần Lan được chia ra làm 2 loại: Đại học Nghiên cứu (University) và đại học Khoa học Ứng dụng (University of Applied Sciences). Các trường đại học ở Phần Lan, cả đại học nghiên cứu và đại học khoa học ứng dụng đều cung cấp chương trình Cử nhân và Thạc sĩ, tuy nhiên sẽ khác về tiêu chí tuyển sinh.
1. Khái niệm “Đại học Khoa học Ứng dụng”
Các trường đại học Khoa học Ứng dụng có sứ mệnh có sứ mệnh đào tạo các chuyên gia chú trọng đến nhu cầu của thị trường lao động.
- Phương pháp học: tập trung kết học học tập và thực hành, mở ra nhiều cơ hội cho sinh viên đi làm ngay trong khi theo học tại trường nhờ sự liên kết chặt chẽ với nhiều doanh nghiệp.
- Thời gian học bậc Cử nhân: 3,5 – 4 năm tùy chương trình học
- Điều kiện học Thạc sĩ: yêu cầu sinh viên phải đi làm 2-3 năm trước khi apply học vào bậc Thạc sĩ của trường.
